ACO: A Resonance of Emerald

Category: NZ Performance, Performance(s)
Posted by @ 6:27 pm

The Auckland Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Peter Scholes, and with special guest Helen Medlyn, performs a ‘composer portrait’ of Eve de Castro Robinson.

Sunday 13 September 2009 5:00 PM

“And as for ‘why do I compose?’ There seems to be an inner surge of creative energy which must spring out and manifest itself in musical form. This usually involves much gazing out at trees and water (two life forces) and summoning up embryonic flickers and traces of sounds and ideas which may agree to be shaped and manipulated into larger forms and structures.

“I’m continually trying to figure out how to bridge the gap between being able to allow something to come into being and then to make some personal ‘concrete’ sense of it. I do try to achieve a balance between the peace of mind necessary for depth and clarity of contemplation, and the open and trusting (and therefore extremely vulnerable) state of being that is creative. I can only compose from inner conviction and speak with my heart. And I often return to a statement by Berio, who sees music as ‘a gift to be given and a gift to be received’ “.

The municipal cultural institute, ‘Joaquin Chapaprieta’ has organised the (seventh) annual ‘SYMPHONY COMPOSITION CONTEST – CITY OF TORREVIEJA’ which will take place under the following rules:

RULES.
1. All those composers who wish to participate may do so.
2. The compositions should be original and unedited and not be a copy, modification or a version of any existing composition nor have been previously published through any media. Any entry which has been, or appears to have been previously presented to the public or received its ‘premier’ outside of this competition may be disqualified by the decision of the jury. The composition should have a duration of more than fifteen minutes and less than twenty minutes.
3. The content of the work, as well as its form, shall be of ‘free choice’ and arranged for the instruments detailed in the attached annex. It should be noted that the jury will expect the use of ALL of the instruments listed in the annex except those which are indicated as optional. Failure to comply with this rule could result in the disqualification of the entry.
4. Works should be submitted in quintipulate on paper size DIN A3, and accompanied by the individual material (partichelas) of the corresponding part for each of the instruments as detailed in the annex. Together with the work submitted, which should not bear either the name nor known pseudonym of the composer but merely a chosen title, should be enclosed a separate, sealed envelope which is clearly marked on the outside with the chosen title of the work. Within this envelope should be enclosed details of the composer: name, surnames, address, copy of national identity document or passport, telephone number and electronic mail address if applicable. Any non-compliance of this rule may lead to disqualification.
5. All entries must be received by 31st October 2009 and the jury’s decision will be announced before the end of the year 2009.
6. Entries should be sent, within the specified time, to:

9. The prize-winning composition will receive its “PREMIER” during a special concert by the “UNION MUSICAL TORREVEJENSE” (www.unionmusicaltorrevejense.com) sometime during the first semester of 2010. Regardless that the rights of ownership of the entry will remain with the author, he / she, in accordance with the rules of this competition, will be obliged to ensure that, in any future publication of the composition, the winning entry will be publicised with the following annex: “PRIZEWINNER OF THE VII ANNUAL SYMPHONY COMPOSITION CONTEST “CIUDAD DE TORREVIEJA”.
10. All other works submitted and not deemed to be the winner will be kept by the ‘Ayuntamiento’ of Torrevieja for a period of three months from the date of the publication of jury’s decision, after which the composers may collect their entries in person or by sending an authorised representative.
11. The competition shall be declared void if the jury should decide that the standard required has not been reached.

CALL FOR SCORES - Manila Composers’ Lab

Category: Overseas Performance, Workshop/Readings
Posted by Glenda Keam @ 8:51 pm

We are now receiving the sketches for the workshop. The workshop
will begin with preliminary readings on June 4th. The workshop proper
will be from June 8-10 with a culminating concert of the hopefully more polished
sketches on the 11th. They can be received in the following e-mail addresses:

jonas.baes@gmail.com
dgquejada@gmail.com

or they can be sent via post to the following address:

Department of Theory and Composition
College of Music
Abelardo Hall
University of the Philippines
Diliman, Quezon City 1101

The sketches should be set for the following instruments in ANY
combination: Flute, Oboe, Bb/Bass Clarinet, French Horn, Bassoon

Please be advised that we are expected to improve on these sketches
over the course of the workshop, so any finished scores will be
expected to be improved upon at its conclusion.

Deadline for submissions will be on the first week of March 2009. It would probably be a good idea to somehow attach your e-mail address
to the sketches so that the ensemble can contact you for clarifications as needed.

For anyone sending their sketches via e-mail, we can accommodate files
of the following formats: Finale .MUS, Sibelius .SIB, Adobe .PDF,
.JPEG/.JPG/.BMP images

If you’re using new software that hasn’t been mentioned above, please
let us know. We might be interested.

Best Regards,
Nick Quejada
